Σύμφωνα με την ελληνική μυθολογία, η Ευρώπη ήταν η όμορφη κόρη του βασιλιά της Φοινίκης, Αγήνορα, και της Τηλεφάσσας, αλλά και αδελφή του Κάδμου (ιδρυτή της Θήβας). Κάποτε, όταν έπαιζε με τις φίλες της αμέριμνη στην παραλία, την είδε ο Δίας και θαμπώθηκε από την ομορφιά της.

According to ancient Greek mythology Europe was the daughter of king Agenor, in Phoenicia, and his queen Telephassa (or Argiope). Agenor himself his said to have been descended from Poseidon. Europa was sister to Cadmus, Cilix and Phoenix.
One night Europe had a very strange dream. She dreamt that the continent of Asia and the other nameless continent across the water appeared before her in the shape of women and quarrelled about who was going to own her........................

Zeus verliebte sich in sie. Er verwandelte sich wegen seiner argwöhnischen Gattin Hera in einen Stier.

En la mitología griega, Europa (en griego antiguo Εὐρώπη Eúrṓpē) era una mujer fenicia de Tiro que terminaría dando su nombre al continente europeo. Hay dos mitos diferentes sobre cómo llegó Europa al mundo griego: en la más familiar fue seducida por el dios Zeus transformado en toro, quien la llevó a Creta a lomos, pero en el otro cuenta Heródoto que fue secuestrada por los minoicos, quienes la llevaron igualmente a Creta.

Le prime tracce scritte del mito di Europa risalgono ai tempi di Omero ed Esiodo, intorno all’VIII secolo a.C. Nell’Iliade Zeus evoca, tra i suoi molti amori, quello con Europa, mentre nella Teogonia Esiodo accenna a un’Europa figlia di Teti, una delle divinità marine.
